DeAnza College Films

Bicycle Wheels of Tragedy 5 minutes, 55 seconds
An important film about the hazards of not engaging the kickstand of your bicycle.

The film was made in 1991 on 16mm film at DeAnza College in Cupertino, California. It was transferred to 3/5 inch Umatic video tape and edited on a cuts only video editor at Ohlone College in Fremont, California. The music for the film was edited at Fremont Adult School's Educational Video Center, which allowed access to thier extensive production music library. The stock shots in the beginning of the film are from Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series which, because they're government films are in the public domain.

Emily's Dream 3 minutes, 5 second

Made in 1990 with an estimated budget of $127, this Super8 film, was the first and last movie I shot and edited completely on film. The total fredom experienced by non-lenear editing would have to wait till the advent many years later of Final Cut Pro. This film is presented in it's original silent format with the only changes made being some slight color correction and a tile added to explain what you could have seen on the screen, had the shot not been to horrably underexposed.

Cinemasports Entry

The following film was created for Cinemasports, a filmmaking event where at 9am partispants are told four ingredients they must have in their films, then at 7pm all the finished films are shown at a public showing.

Forged Ambiguities 5 minutes, 55 seconds
This was made for the January 15th, 2005 Cinemasports. The opening and closing credits was a song I had already composed using Apple
GarageBand. Forged Ambiguities was the name of the song before it was the name of this film. Stock footage came from the Prelinger Archive. Partly because we were eight minutes late, but mostly because of the overwhelming response to Cinemasports, the film wasn't admitted into the showing.

iSight Films

The following films were made using an Apple iSight Video Camera. They were mostly intended as experiments to try out features in different software packages.

Coke 23Seconds
This was my first attempt at a split screen shot and stars me, Michael Edwards. I drew the mattes in Adobe PhotoShop and used
Apple Final Cut Pro for the compositing. Halfway through the shot it dissolves from the first matte to the second matte.

The Color of Miniature War * 1 Minute, 28 Seconds
Another attampt at travelling mattes. The voices of the soilders are both me, Michael Edwards. The mattes and composites were created in Abobe AfterEffects. Editing, music, titles and sound effects (including the
Wilhelf Scream) where done in Apple Final Cut Pro.

Floating Crunch 9 seconds.
My second attempt at a traveling matte and stars Jeff Burton. The matte and composite was created in Abobe AfterEffects. Editing and sound effects where done in
Apple Final Cut Pro. With it's sideshow music and moronic comedy slide whistle sound effects it's almost too much to bear, but luckily it's only nine seconds long.

Flying Geoff 4 Seconds
This was my first try at stop motion animation and stars Geoff Kahermanes. I used
iStopMotion to capture the footage.

Geoff's Drive 37 Seconds
This was my second attempt at stop motion animation and stars Geoff Kahermanes and Jeff Burton (never direct a film that stars two people with the same first name). I used
iStopMotion to capture the footage and Apple Final Cut Pro to add titles, music and sound effects (including the Wilhelf Scream).

Greg Electrocutes Himself * 53 Seconds
Yet another attmept at travelling mattes. The matte and composite was created in Abobe AfterEffects. Editing, titles, music and sound effects where done in
Apple Final Cut Pro.

Hitting Self 8 Seconds
My first attempt at a traveling matte and stars Jeff Burton. The matte and composite was created in Abobe AfterEffects. Editing and sound effects where done in
Apple Final Cut Pro.

The Magic of Jeff Burton 1 Minute, 1 Second
This is a special effect extraveganza starring Jeff Burton, a magician who can make objects levitate and fly away from him but often makes the objects first hit him in the crotch. Editing, music, sound effects and annoying sezure enducing titles where created in
Apple Final Cut Pro.
